Cub Activity Hike

On Saturday 22nd May, 11 teams of 4 to 6 cubs and a leader from eight Packs set off from Bishops Waltham loaded with drinks and smothered in sun cream for a short hike to Lyons Copse camp site. The sun-dance done by Babs Miles, our ADC Beavers, in her bright orange t-shirt had done the trick and the weather was perfect as each team of excited and expectant Cubs was sent out from the start by the pond at Bishops Waltham at 15 minute intervals.

Soon the teams were met with a series of signs asking them questions about road safety on which they were tested on arrival at Base 1. A short walk then took them to Base 2 at a ford near the source of the River Hamble, here the Cubs had to build a raft to safely transport a teddy bear across the rushing waters. Suffice to say, this teddy bear was later seen at Lyons Copse drying out in the sun! Base 3 was a giant catapult with Cubs firing paper across the field into targets worth different points. A team of 4 Beaver Scouts from the 73rd along with their leaders were providing the Cubs with a well a needed drink before attempting their blindfolded ball throwing game. Whilst the leaders enjoyed watching the golfers on the Meon Valley course the Cubs at Base 5 were attempting an old Scouting favourite: completing a short course on 3 man wooden skis. On arrival at Lyons Copse there was time for another drink before completing the impossible puzzle at Base 6.

Kevin Lee, ADC Cubs, said "It was a great event, I would like to thank Neil and his team for organising such an amazing day. I was able to meet all the teams at some point during the day and everyone was happy, smiling and clearly enjoying themselves. As I was listening to the scores coming in over the radio I knew they were going to be close, we didn’t know the winners for sure until right near the end. Well done to the 73rd for winning the trophy back, next year’s teams will have to work hard to stop them getting a hat-trick!"

Portsmouth Scout Excels At National Scout Archery Championships

Alex Joseph from Endurance Explorers and Portsmouth Scout Archery Club came third in the Under 18's 20 yard Target competition on the 9th May 2010 at the National Scout Archery Championships at Phasels Wood Camp Site, Hertfordshire.

Alex has only been shooting  for nine months, so he did extremely well.

We took five Scouts with us, Paige Bridgeman, Steven Young, Daniel and Joshua Green plus Alex and they also did very well.

There were 420 competitors and despite the cold, it was a brilliant weekend.   There were a number of competitions and age groups and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.

Scouts On A Search For The Holy Pail

Nine Teams, each of 4 – 6 Scouts took part in this year’s Lamp Trophy night escape on the weekend of 27th – 28th March. Their quest took place around Stansted Park near Rowlands Castle, over a course of about 5 ½ miles. Along their journey, they undertook various tasks and challenges to help them discover the meaning of the Holy Pail. All the teams successfully completed the course, only a couple of them taking a slightly different route, before being put right! A good night was had by all, helped by very favourable weather conditions. After a few hours sleep, and 150 sausages for breakfast, the teams were assembled for the presentations! Victorious on this occasion was the team from the 28th, with the 8th (Team A) coming second and the 72nd (Team B) third, although all the teams scored highly. Well done to all the boys and girls who took part, they all showed great spirit and determination, they all seemed to be having a great time! The holy pail turned out to be just a bucket full of holes!

Many thanks to the 30 or so Leaders, Explorer Scouts and helpers who made the event possible.

Overall Results:

Place Team Score (Out of 150)
1st 28th 127
2nd 8th (A) 126
3rd 72nd (B) 122
4th 23rd 119.5
5th 72nd (A) 119.5
6th 8th (B) 119

Civic Reception Held For City Scouts

On Monday 22nd February about 40 adult members of the City of Portsmouth Scout Council attended a reception held in the Guildhall to mark the Centenary of Scouting in Portsmouth.

The Lord Mayor, Cllr Terry Hall, gave a short welcoming speech during which she spoke about some interesting historical ‘Scouting’ documents that came to light when her family moved into their new home some years ago. They included letters to a Patrol Leader by the surname of Bolt and contained interesting facts about scouting in the early 1910s.

She concluded her speech by proposing a Toast to the "City of Portsmouth Scouts". After the toast she presented the City Commissioner, Mr Richard Merefield, with the historical documents to be kept in our City Scouting Archives.

Richard thanked the Lord Mayor for the documents then presented her with a momento of the Portsmouth's Scouting Centenary in the form of a two City Scout Badges (one being our special Centenary Badge) and an inscription, in a mounted in a frame.

In conclusion he presented the Lord Mayor with a personal gift in gratitude for all the support that she has given to Scouting during her term of office.

As it was Lord Baden-Powell’s and his wife Olave's birthday on the same day the assembly then drank a toast in their memory.

Below are a few of the photographs taken during the evening.
